# AI for service members & veterans

This track is for people who serve and people who've served. Two jobs, really: using AI on duty without creating an OPSEC problem, and getting real help with the civilian transition.

## On duty: the non-negotiables

**Never paste classified information, CUI, PII/PHI, or unit or operational details into commercial AI tools.** Anything you type into a commercial chatbot can be stored and reviewed. The Department of the Navy calls this a persistent OPSEC risk ([DON CIO guidance](https://www.doncio.navy.mil/FileHandler.ashx?id=19658)).

For official unclassified work, use your approved platform. In DoD that's GenAI.mil. The Department of the Navy describes it as certified to IL5 and authorized for CUI, but *not* for PII or PHI ([DON CIO, Feb 2026](https://www.doncio.navy.mil/ContentView.aspx?id=20456)).

And your command's policy wins. Check it before you use any AI tool for work, every time.

## Off duty and transitioning

Transition comes with a mountain of paperwork, and this is where AI earns its keep. You can turn your notes from transition classes, networking calls, and informational interviews into follow-ups and action lists in a few minutes ([Issue #1](https://aiexplainedplainly.com/issues/001/) shows exactly how).

It also helps translate military experience into resume language a civilian hiring manager will get. There are free tools for this, like Hiring Our Heroes' Resume Engine ([VA News](https://news.va.gov/150284/turn-military-experience-civilian-ready-resume/)). Read every AI-written bullet before you use it. Check it's accurate, and take out anything sensitive.

## What's coming in this track

Plain-English explainers on the AI rules and approved tools, always linked to the official source. Transition workflows for resumes, LinkedIn, interview prep, and researching certifications. And each weekly workflow gets its own safety note for anyone in uniform.

We never use military seals, insignia, or service marks, and we don't imply any official connection.
